T-Mobile Sidekick 4G Android Phone, Pearl Magenta

Powered by Android and manufactured by Samsung, the new T-Mobile Sidekick 4G pays tribute to its heritage with its stylish good looks and a killer keyboard while redefining messaging and upgrading to 4G speeds. One of T-Mobile's fastest smartphones running on America's Largest 4G Network, the new Sidekick 4G is capable of delivering theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps.

The new Sidekick 4G redefines messaging with its five-row QWERTY keyboard and Sidekick Group & Cloud Text services. Sidekick's Group Text feature lets customers create, name, manage and participate in reply-all group text conversations, enabling them to lead their network in conversation and social planning. Group Text breathes new life into one of the most popular forms of messaging allowing Sidekick 4G customers to initiate and share the benefit of the application with SMS-capable devices from flip phones to smartphones.

In addition, Cloud Text provides the option to text with friends or groups across platforms, wherever from the comfort of their PC’s large screen and keyboard, or from their new Sidekick 4G. Preloaded with Facebook and Twitter applications, the new Sidekick 4G provides easy interaction with customers’ social networks by allowing them to update their status from the notification pane, browse their feeds from the home screen, and synch their social contacts to the phone’s address book for instant access to post on their friends' walls or comment on their status.

Beyond a communication hub, the new Sidekick 4G is now an entertainment hub. With speeds as fast as home broadband and the Sidekick Media Room, customers have one place to stream and enjoy music, videos, movies, YouTube, T-Mobile TV, Slacker Radio, and to search for content regardless of the source. Multitasking is easier than ever with the Sidekick 4G's jump key, a physical button that enables customers to quickly switch between active applications, even during a phone call, or assign keyboard shortcuts to their favorite functions or applications.

Awesome Android
-By Shawn Beal

Here's what I think. So far I have seen negative reviews but I've had absolutely no problem. It takes getting used to and its great for loyal sidekick users. I for one, LOVE THIS!!! Okay, being a previous Sidekick user for 3 years helps. I find this has great features, a nice sleek design and is lightweight. Motorola Slide was a bit heavier than Samsung Sk 4G. Samsung version has more features. Two cameras, one on the back and one in the front. This is handy if you want to do communicate via webcam such as Skype. Granted this is still new, we have to wait and find the apps that allows this use of feature. But what's the hurry? Moving on. Android apps, gamings and such to while away the boredom. Granted, the battery life is iffy but then again, I've experienced this with Iphones, Itouch and such but its ANDROID! It takes up a lot of battery life, GET OVER IT! Recharging will be required. However I found that the battery drains a lot quicker for some reason and it took me a while to work out the kinks. I discovered that if you adjust the lighting mode helps. As well goes for Background data synch, receive data needs to be TURNED off! Its right under Account & Sync and uncheck that. That helps a lot. Keep it off unless you want to download apps it will ask you to turn it back on. Oh not to forget the screen is larger for easy viewing. I found that popping the screen open is little stiff since it's on a hinge but we can adapt to it. The keys are wider apart for easy typing.

This Sidekick 4G is awesome. No regrets.

Great phone
-By Paul Kimelman

I am not a former Sidekick user and I have never used Android before - had a Blackberry. This phone has been great - had it for a week. I tried the Motorola phone, but Motoblue would not work with my corp email.
Pros for me:
- Works perfectly with Exchange active sync (EAS) for corporate email, including calendar and GAL.
- Works perfectly with Yahoo and a POP server for personal email.
- Has nice layout, but I added widgets to get what I wanted. Made it look more like the Mot to be honest.
- The camera and video look great and it is easy to hold with one or both hands.
- Has a trackball that works with the keyboard - like the blackberry. That is great. Beats trying to position by keys or your finger. Keyboard is really nice and easy to use with one or both hands.
- Screen is beautiful. Very clean looking and nice colors.
- Although plastic, feels very solid. Much lighter than the Mot.
- Sound quality is good through speaker and works well with Bluetooth - no disruption when doing things on screen.
Cons for me:
- No flash on camera and only 3MP. Picture look good, but this means no zoom. Autofocus is good but slow.
- No desk charging dock - I hope one becomes available eventually.

I think it is an excellent example of a touch+keyboard phone with a good slider (tilt up and slide really) and a good starting set of apps.

UPDATE: someone complained about the screen in sunlight and I was concerned about this too. But, if you go to settings.display, you can set it to automatically adjust to light (uses forward facing camera) and then it works fine in bright light. Of course, the black background (supposed to be for power savings) of the newer Android makes it harder since the contrast of light on dark is not nearly as good as dark on light. But, this is an android problem. I am hopeful they will make it easy to change this via theme-changer or other control. Right now, you have to edit XML files to fix that.

Fujitsu SCANSNAP

Tiny, amazing travel scanner
-By THATCH

I love the ScanSnap line and have had several models. I have adopted this product line at my workplace for personal scanners, and we have never had a failure. They're fast, reliable, durable and this model is no different. I've also owned the model slightly larger than this, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005). I would definitely choose this model for the mobile traveling worker.

This is the first ultra mobile Scansnap, and I cannot convey how impressed I am with it! The device is literally about the size of two snickers bars put end to end. It's tiny, feels well constructed, and does not require external power. The software installation is quick is easy. It does not come with Adobe Acrobat Full version, like some of the older models used to include. It does not scan double sided as do many of the other Scansnap devices. If you've used a scansnap this one puts the brakes on and reverses you-- the paper actually feeds in the front and out the back-- Opposite of all Scansnaps. It works just fine once you realize what's going on there.

Those couple of drawbacks considered, if you are a mobile road warrior who needs to scan on the go, (signed paperwork, business cards, receipts, etc.) this is clearly my most preferred choice for a mobile scanner. The quality of scans is completely satisfactory, and honestly this little device does much better with tiny thin pieces of paper like receipts as compared to some of the larger models-- that are designed for a whole stack of paper-- and from time to time will skew a thin tiny receipt sideways and crinkle it up.

My thoughts on this model vs. the S1300: If you travel and set up at a hotel, temporary office or trade table type environment for a few days or all day, or need double sided scanning, the S1300 is a fine option. It's larger and takes more space if you're flying. If you travel or fly daily, or move from client to client during the day and want the smallest lightest option, this would be my recommended option. It would be perfect for sales forces, insurance company members, consultants, and others who go from place to place quickly, want minimal bulk, and the ability to scan a few documents quickly & easily. If you need to scan small stacks of paper, go with the S1300.

As I continue to have the scanner longer I will plan to update the review. But at this point, the install was easy, the scan quality is good and use is easy, and the device is unbelievably small yet feels "not flimsy" and I couldn't be any more pleased with it's functionality and portability. If you have any specific questions or would like a certain additional feature tested, please leave a comment below and I will answer you ASAP.

Update: I have added a photo of it in my hand for size comparison. It's unbelievably trim.

Update: I've completed my first business trip with 13 pages of various sized receipts, full page receipts, baggage fee wide receipts, etc. I was able to scan them all in about 2 minutes. As well, a couple features I didn't mention explicitly above: The scanner auto aligns the images-- you don't have to worry about feeding them through exactly straight. Finally, the software "sits and waits" between receipts you feed through, until you click "finished". This is a FAR superior software feature to the larger S1300-- because it takes a few moments to put down & pick up another receipt. The scanner sits patiently and waits for you to feed through as many receipts or pieces of paper as you want, with no urgency.

The scanning went perfectly and I'll post a few examples of the scans with no personal info on them as an example of scan quality. Since I've had the scanner I carry it with me in my backpack every day to & from work and everywhere I travel with my work backpack. Still going strong with no issues.

Ingenious: The "MacBook Air" of Scanners
-By Jerome A. Carney

At last, this road warrior's arsenal is finally complete. I've tried multiple portable scanners over the years -- Antec, Neat, CardScan -- but they were always either slow, producing poor quality scans (Antec, Neat) or they lacked flexibility for scanning a range of document sizes (CardScan).

In the meantime I'd become an enthusiastic fan of Fujitsu's ScanSnap line, owning two desktop models, one for home and one for work. They performed so well, in fact, that I inevitably postponed all business trip scanning until I got back to the office, but after being out of town for a few days a longer, it was still always a chore I dreaded coming home to.

So the day the S1100 went on sale, I snapped one up right away, reviews-unread, and fortunately my faith in Fujitsu proved to be well-founded. The latest member of the ScanSnap family delivers most of the punch of the desktop models, including quality, speed, smart design and brilliantly simple-to-use software. A couple of features had to be sacrificed to whittle the ScanSnap down to ultraportable size that scans and chargers over a single USB cable, but they make for a reasonable compromise: the S1100 doesn't perform two-sided scans, and there's no multi-page feed. For my line of work this means I'm still able to process about 80% of my scans while I'm on the road -- usually at night, while chilling in front of the TV in my hotel room -- which gives me a huge head start on client follow-up and expense report filing. Just like its desktop big brothers, the S1100 is a little paper-eating monster, and you can work your way through an unwieldy stack of paper in a surprisingly short amount of time. The included Evernote integration is just icing on the cake, making uploads, filing, organizing and accessing files over multiple computers/devices a breeze.

There are two shortcomings with the new ScanSnap that aren't exactly deal-breakers, but still worth mentioning, although I'm still comfortable rounding up my recommendation to a 5-star review. A travel case would be greatly appreciated, especially since the S1100 is by its nature bound to spend much of its existence getting tossed around in suitcases. Build quality seems adequate enough, but I'm still concerned. For now, I've managed to recycle the slip cover case that came with my Neat scanner (so I guess it wasn't a total waste of a hundred bucks), but I'm still looking for something a little more solid.

The other annoyance is the ridiculously embarrassing business card software that's bundled with the ScanSnap line. I'm comfortable enough writing code that I managed to slap together a script that imports a PDF scan of business cards into my CardScan software -- which I never truly appreciated just how brilliant it was until I tried working with its horrendous, counter-intuitive competitors. Fujitsu really needs to track down a business card software that's worthy to be bundled in with the otherwise flawless ScanSnap line up, or they should just bury the option altogether, as fast as they can.

I just received my S1100 yesterday and its AWESOME. (I am using a MacBook Pro) It is everything I have been looking for in a portable scanner. As a Realtor, I need to be connected anywhere I am, and this tool makes that possible. I can quickly scan contracts and have them in another agent's inbox before I leave the coffee shop!

I do wish it came with a case though. I will have to order one because I am worried it will be damaged in my crowded messenger bag.

I am in the process of digitizing all of my listing and sales contracts and this scanner has been surprisingly fast. In the office, I would be better suited with a larger model with an auto document feeder for long (20pg+) contracts, but this will work. Once I get everything digitized, adding new contracts will be a breeze.

One really cool thing is that the scanner has a feature that auto aligns the pages. Sometimes its kind of difficult to get the paper in exactly straight, but the scanner seems to straighten the paper as it feeds. I don't know how it does it, but it works well!

In closing, I whole-heartedly recommend this product for anyone looking for a portable scanner. The included software is great too. It doesn't include any junk, only the bare essentials.

By the way, I looked at some other models at my local computer store, and the Scansnap build quality far exceeds the competition.

Fosmon Transparent Clear Screen Protector

This film is not cut to the size that it need to be. It is the correct size of the iPhone 4 screen but the manufacturer clearly did not test it on the real iPhone 4. The film is maybe 0.5mm too big and the microscopic plastic layer on the edges does not allow for it to touch the glass on the edges. Hard to explain, but it looks great all around, except the round edges where it's not touching the glass.
To manufacturer:
1. Keep the packaging
2. Keep the same price
3. Remeasure the GLASS surface, not the overall front surface, because that plastic band screw things up for cover.

(They assured me they were prime of the line.) at the moment, I purchased some case mate screen protectors from Wal-Mart. there have been 3 within the pack, and all 3 had flaws. Some very little dot of something or different that prevented the quilt from occurring smoothly. I finally resorted to at least one of these that i would gotten as a free gift from another purchase, and they are AWESOME! No flaws, easy to apply, good non-gummy protection. i love them!

Great for in-cabinet PC unit cooling.
-By D. Skiba

I house my PC inside a 15" wide base cabinet below the workspace in my basement-level office. I have to keep the cabinet door closed (locked actually) to keep the children from turning the unit off and on. Unfortunately, the inside of the cabinet gets pretty hot from the PC due to the lack of circulation. I needed an inexpensive, convenient, and safe way to keep the cabinet cool. I purchased the Thermaltake Desktop USB Cooling Fan, cut a 3.5" square opening on the side of the cabinet, and installed the fan facing out of the openning to draw the warm air out. This solution worked perfectly! I can adjust the Thermaltake fan speed up if I'm running CPU intensive applications - like games or watching a DVD - to draw more air. The fan is very quite - unnoticable really, and the fan grill keeps little fingers from touching the fan blade. I would highly recommend this product.

Works well, but no power switch
-By E. Kim

I use this to cool my PowerBook G4. The laptop is up on a simple stand, but it runs pretty hot; the CPU often runs up to 142+ degrees F, at which point the noisy internal fans turn on. With the little TT fan blowing across the keyboard area, the PowerBook seldom reaches 140 degrees, and the internal fans almost never kick in. The TT fan is nearly silent at its lowest levels, very quiet at the level I use (~halfway up), and not terribly loud even at its highest setting. It's definitely got a DIY-geeky look, but at least it's not geek-bling with pulsing LEDs or anything. My one big knock against it is its lack of an off switch. Seems like it would have been simple enough to have it click off when you turn it all the way down; as it is, I have to unplug it at the end of the day.

Does The Job
-By mayfayre

I have an external hard drive that is "air-cooled" but it is in a location where air circulation is somewhat blocked. This little fan takes care of that problem and keeps it running cool. I had tried battery-powered fans, but the batteries would die too quickly. If I'm not using the external HD, I just reposition the fan to provide extra circulation for the tower.

This fan is extremely quiet and works unobtrusively. I don't even hear it running. Since I normally shut off my computer when I'm done, I'm not really bothered by the lack of an on-off switch.

This fan is a great solution to one of life's annoying little problems.

Best Tracking Wireless Mouse ever made
-By Travis Dockweiler

First off, I've tried over half a dozen wireless mice in the last five years. Every new one seems to claim that they're all lag free. That's not the case with me. I've even tried wireless mice up to a hundred dollars in price and even some Blue-tooth mice. They are usually fine on a small laptop screen, but when you connect them up to a 24" LCD there is barely noticeable lag. It's so small that 95% of people would probably not notice it at all. It only seems to occur on large screens and it's a big enough annoyance to keep me from using a wireless mouse of any kind.

I heard about the new Blue-Track technology and just figured it was just a marketing thing and not really something new. I figured it was perhaps just an Optical mouse in disguise. After losing my receiver for my VX Revolution (which is a very good mouse) I needed a new mouse for my laptop with a small receiver. I read up about these and a almost went for the Mobile Mouse 5000 instead, but glad I didn't. I saw these on display at a local store and they were out of stock. I checked online and most every place was out of stock of them. I waited a week and my local store only got in the white version. After another few weeks I ended up driving a half hour just to pick up this mouse in black. Yes, I actually waited just so I didn't have to buy the ugly white version!

Instead of connecting it to my laptop I immediately hooked it up to my PC connected to a 24" display. I immediately noticed there was no micro-lag AT ALL. I was pretty impressed to say the least. It actually tracks just as well as my Logitech G5 that I was previously using. So far I have not installed any of the software on the disc, so I can not comment on that. I usually prefer not to if I can avoid it.

In my picture viewing software the mouse scroll wheel skips by pictures too fast, so that it's nearly impossible to scroll down one image at a time. I can fix the scroll speed in the software easily I'm sure. The scroll wheel itself is a bit too thin, but this is a laptop mouse, so it's not a big deal. The wheel just feels cheap and I've always preferred the Logitech wheels due to the clicking sound it makes when you scroll it. The auto-scroll on the VX revolution is a really nice feature.

Unfortunately the entire mouse feels cheap. It IS cheap, so that's not a big deal. It's not bad enough to make me want to not use it though. There is a rubber grip material on both sides of the mouse and i'm not sure why this was needed, since it's too smooth to begin with. It does however make the mouse look a bit better. It is a very well designed mouse and looks pretty nice.

I'm currently using this still on my desktop computer. As my main mouse it's a bit small, but for a laptop it's PERFECT. I actually liked the blue-track so much that I went out and bought the Wireless Mouse 5000 for my desktop. I didn't like that much (too big and heavy!) so I'm going to keep this for desktop use despite it being so small.

My suggestion to Microsoft is that they should make a higher quality version of this. One with a metal scroll wheel and better buttons. Pretty much like a top of the line model like the MX revolution. This actually tracks better then that mouse, so why not?

It's the best tracking wireless mouse I've ever tried and the best mouse you can get for the price!

UPDATE: 3/2/2010

I love this mouse so much that I did end up buying two of them. One for my main computer and the second for my laptop. The nice thing about it when using it on a laptop is the receiver is so small you don't notice it. I tested the tracking on carpet, wood flooring and even glass and it was no problem. The most difficult surface for it to track on is tan leather. I often sit in my leather recliner while using my laptop and put the mouse on the arm rest (it's pretty wide). Sounds dumb, but it works! It's not even all that flat, but slightly curved! Occasionally after every 10 minutes the mouse starts to throw a fit and I have to switch to a different surface. Once I use it on a different surface for a few minutes and switch back, it's fine. It's almost as if the mouse re-learns how to track on the new surface. Very strange. I'm just amazed that it'd even work on such a surface to begin with.

The only minor negative I've found is that the battery doesn't last long. It's not even worth mentioning since batteries are so cheap. I've been through about two in a month. I've also noticed some stores charging more for some colors due to being hard to find!

Motorola Defy Android Phone

Great 'Mid-Range' phone
-By Robert Beier

Pros: Great call quality, fast processor, nice quality screen; Cons: Motoblur, no HD Video.

I had a Motorola Cliq and swore I would never use another Motorola Android phone after that experience. I had planned to upgrade to a G2 or MyTouch HD, but just couldn't afford it. I read the reviews on this device and decided to give Motorola one last chance.

I can't yet speak on whether or not the experience with support or upgrades will be any better as it is too soon to tell, but the device itself is a great phone. The screen is not huge, but it's not small either; it is bright and very easy to read. Images look great on it as well. Though it only has a 800mghz processor it does run rather well and if you plan to root this thing you can easily get your phone up to 1ghz or more. I am not the biggest fan of Motoblur as it can cause the phone to lag, but replacing the Moto home screen can take care of a lot of that lag. The picture quality is not the best, but it is decent; I only wish it had HD video, but for quick videos on the fly it gets the job done.

If you are in the market for a quality Android phone, but can't afford the $200 price tag of most high end phones, this would make a great choice for you.

Tired of Frilly fragile phones?
-By Eric A. Campbell

I purchased this phone about a month ago and it is really everything i hoped it would be. the only thing i don't care for is the way the camera capture button works through the touch screen rather than a button on the casing. I live at the beach and this phone goes with me everywhere, and after a month (without being in a case) this phone looks just as it did when I took it out of the box. It has enough features to impress without being so overly complicated that you never use them. I would recommend this phone to any person who is tired of caring for their phone like a newborn, I don't want to buy cases and screen protectors. I've even swam with this phone in my board shorts a couple of times! (not on purpose) and have had no issues what so ever.

Great Phone Does Everything I Need It To
-By Eric R. Bauer

Pros: lightweight, durable, small, fast, Android OS, T-Mobile network, DLNA, GPS very accurate, speaker is LOUD, reliable

Cons: Gorilla Glass will sometimes have some issues recognized your finger in extreme cold, camera could probably be better, needs better Flash support

First I'd like to say I was an early adopter to the entire Android platform coming from a G1. This phone fulfilled all my expectations and made up for all the shortcomings of the G1. Before I made the decision on buying this phone I spent a week with the MyTouch 4G before returning it for this. The MyTouch is an outstanding phone don't get me wrong but it just wasn't for me. I found the Mytouch to be too big and heavy and thought I would break it if I dropped it. I was tempted by the front facing camera which I came to the realization that it would never get used. I've already dropped the Defy multiple times with no issues. Don't be fooled by some of the specs this phone is fast. After coming from the rooted G1 I was also skeptical on the entire Motoblur interface. I really don't see what the big deal is that you have to make a free account through Motorola and deal with some different icons on the screen. If you really don't like the look of it try LauncherPro. If you are new to the Android platform don't worry, if you don't like the way something is on the phone there is probably a free application to download that will function the way you want. I wish Amazon had this phone when I bought it but I had to go to the T-Mobile store.

All in all very nice
-By T. M. Fitterer

The Alupen is all in all a very nice tool. I got it for use with my iphone. It is made very well and has a great, solid feel in your hand. It comes with a nice leather like sleeve to store it in when not in use which is nice to protect the snazzy color finish. It's just a little over 4 inches long, so compact enough to go with the iphone, but not so small that it is difficult to use. I got it primarily to use in sketching or handwritten notes. It writes with reasonably good accuracy...definitely more precise than using a finger, though misses sometimes...and sometimes it does seem to have "dead spots" where when it hits certain parts of the screen it won't write at all. Haven't found a rhyme or reason for that yet...maybe it's where I've smudged the screen with my finger? The tip seems to be rather airy/hollow, so maybe needs a little more filler to aid in "conductivity"? But, it doesn't scratch the screen at all, and is nice if you want to limit screen smudge. This is the first stylus I've tried, so can't compare it to another, but I am happy with this purchase and would get another one because I really like the thick pencil like design and quality craftsmanship that went into this product.

It just fits perfectly in your hand
-By George Ghali

This stylus has the perfect combination of length, weight, and girth to make writing with it feel natural. I did purchase another stylus at the same time, and it's good, too, but this one just feels better overall. I was worried from other reviews that it either wouldn't be long enough (feel like a stub) or would be too fat, but both of these are just false.

Writing with it has been very accurate so far, and certainly worlds better than using my finger. I use the stylus for taking notes on my iPad in meetings. The combination is both more convenient and better for the environment than using a a standard notebook.

It's not perfect, though. The only issue with it really is that it's too fat for most pen holders (e.g. in your laptop bag), and it has no leash or other way to connect it. That just means that it has to either go straight into a bag or into a pocket. Thankfully, it does come with a leather case, which protects it in either scenario.

Overall, there are a lot of styluses to choose from, and short of trying them all, this seems like the safest bet. I don't think that you'll be disappointed with this stylus.

Helps keep my iPad screen clean
-By Barbara

I really like this tool for my iPad touch screen. It puts less strain on my arthritic hands, it is lightweight, designed not to roll away from me when I lay it down, and best of all, it helps to keep my iPad touch screen clean. Works very well.

Very good for what it does
-By Ursiform

A little background: I already have two printers I use. My Epson R2400 is a great photo printer, but only a mediocre general purpose printer. My old HP LaserJet 4M still does the job, but it has some limitations. It's a big energy hog/space heater, so I don't leave it on, and it takes a while to warm up. It's black and white only. And the single feed tray no longer works. I thought this little HP inkjet might be a replacement for my general purpose printing, of which I don't do a lot. I was also intrigued by its Bluetooth capability; I don't print very often from my laptop, but Bluetooth would be a very convenient way to do it when I want to.

I first loaded up the software on my laptop, which took a while. HP is certainly not frugal in loading software. At one point the instructions were to just follow the "add printer" instructions in Windows (XP), which weren't entirely clear for adding a Bluetooth printer. I didn't have much trouble figuring it out, but I've been dealing with computers for a lot more years than I want to think about. HP's instructions could have been more helpful.

After that I was able to print using the Bluetooth connection. I then unplugged the printer, and printed using battery power. It all worked!

Next I loaded the software on my desktop, and set out to print via USB. There is, of course, no USB cable included. Never mind that USB connections on computers are 99% standard, they saved the few dimes including a cable would have cost. Fortunately I have a cable for nearly any occasion, including things nobody has used in twenty years, so I got it hooked up and printing.

The print quality is very good on the paper sample HP included, and almost as good on basic laser printer paper. It can't quite match a laser printer on fine lines and small fonts, but for most people it will suit their needs quite nicely.

As HP included the ability to print borderless photos, I had to test that capability. I printed a photo from Tuscany at 4x6 on both the HP and the R2400. To be fair, I used the stock settings for both, not the adjusted settings I normally use with the R2400. The HP did produce a decent picture. It wasn't up to the R2400's quality, but it's not an expensive photo printer. With some adjustments it could be pretty darn good. I wouldn't recommend getting one to use as a photo printer, but it is certainly capable of printing a photo now and then.

OK, let's talk it's limitations. It has no paper capture tray, which is not surprising in a printer designed to be portable. And its dinky cartridges aren't going to print a lot of pages, especially with a lot of color.

This is a good, light duty printer that will work in a constrained space or as a portable printer. If you plan to do a lot of printing get a larger inkjet printer with separate cartridges for different colors, or a laser printer. If you want to print a lot of photos get a photo printer. But if you are looking for a printer that fits in a small space, can be moved around, and does a good job on the occasional page you need printed, this is a surprisingly good printer.

Almost perfect if you need portability
-By D. Matheny

We already have a good color inkjet printer in the house - but we've been wanting something portable for the last year or so. The main use for this printer is for my wife to take to 'scrapbook weekends'. A little printer is very useful when scrapbooking, but it's just too big of a hassle to lug the full-size printer around with her.

This Officejet 100 mobile printer fits the bill perfectly! Although we ran into some unexpected problems, the overall experience was far better than we expected for a printer of this size. (I will go over some of the issues we've run into during this review.)

Before I get into the specifics of this printer, I should mention that we replaced the included black HP98 cartridge with a photo-color HP99 cartridge. The documentation doesn't mention whether this is possible, and the inside of the printer doesn't list it as being compatible - so I was a bit nervous. Honestly, the only reference I found to the HP99 anywhere was an obscure reference on the HP support sight (and that wasn't very clear). Fortunately, the printer picked up the new cartridge just fine and is using it as expected in combination with the, also included, HP95 color cartridge.

Another thing I did was to download the 'Basic Print Driver' package directly from HP instead of using the included install CD. This was a simple process, and the wizard walks you through setting up a Bluetooth printer connection if you haven't done it before.

Now, let me cover the things that we like about this printer:

1) The output is truly photo quality when using the HP99 cartridge, and the black output looks great as well (when using the HP98 cartridge). I will admit that the photos from our full-size ink-jet do look a bit nicer, but not by a lot. This truly is 'photo quality' output.

2) The Bluetooth connectivity absolutely rocks! When using Bluetooth, this printer is truly wireless - which makes it absolutely simple to pull out of a carrying bag and use. There is no worrying about cables getting lost, or in the way...

3) The overall footprint is very compact (it seems smaller in person than in the product photos). Because of that, you do give up a paper capture tray and the paper feeding isn't the best either - but those are compromises that most portable printer users should be willing to accept.

4) The battery life is excellent! The battery itself looks like a laptop battery, and just plugs into the back of the printer. The charge time from completely drained to fully charged is about an hour - which is pretty good. My wife has taken this on 2 overnight scrapbook retreats and it hasn't needed a charge while she was away; although, she does keep the power cord handy just in case.

5) The print speed is a bit slow for photos - but not overly slow. Once again, I was expecting this, and I felt like it was fast for such a small printer.

6) We have been using it with the borderless 4x6 HP paper, and that works great! We have to feed it one sheet at a time, and also have to push down a bit when it starts feeding; but, once again, I don't mind having to help it along in exchange for the portability.

7) Because of the small size, this printer is incredibly simple to operate. No fancy LCDs or flash memory slots, it just turns on and works as expected without any hassle.

If you've made it this far, I hope I've made it clear that this is a great little printer - but there are some limitations that we expected because of the size. Aside from those issues, we have run into a couple of problems that really do count against the printer:

1) The battery life is good, but the battery itself drains quickly when not in use. For example, we fully charged the battery after using it and then turned off the printer and placed it in a cupboard. The next time it was needed (only a couple of weeks later), we pulled it out and the battery was completely drained - to the point where it wouldn't even turn on. Because of this, you need to be careful to fully charge the printer before you load it up to take it with you. Don't assume the battery is still charged, even if you used it recently...

2) Some people will love this, but I can't believe how long the power cord is! It measures in at longer than 12 feet - and doesn't wrap up that compactly as a result. Honestly, the wrapped up power cord takes up about 1/4 of the space of the entire printer...

Overall, if you're looking for a portable printer, this is the best one I've found and I highly recommend it. On the other hand, don't make the mistake of thinking this will be your main printer at home. Although, at this price, I doubt many people will be thinking that! ;-)

Wow, great printer
-By Merddyn

I was skeptical at first.... a printer with a LI battery? I was pleasantly surprised though. It prints flawlessly, and the battery life is exceptional. The black and white isn't QUITE up to par with my laser printer, but I don't expect an ink jet to be. We primarily use this as a color printer, but the fact that you can unplug it and get up to 500 pages of print jobs off of a single charge is exceptional.

It also prints edgeless photos which is nice. Photo quality is exceptional, but it won't really replace your high end photo printer if super quality is your thing on photos. The photo print quality is exceptional for the average user though. I don't quite have a feel for how long the color cartridges will last, but i'll update the review as time goes on.

Setup was easy via usb. The cable wasn't included, but who doesn't have 375 USB cables laying around in a drawer in this day and age? At first I was a little disappointed that this didn't have built in wireless networking, but then I realized I could pick up a $3 bluetooth (BT) dongle and print wirelessly. Most laptops have BT built in or at least a BT dongle for a mouse so that's perfect for mobile printing. The bluetooth printing directly from your BT cell phone is exceptional as well.

Feeder has a 500 page capacity which is nice, but no paper tray. You have to give something up for a mobile printer and if I had a choice it would be to have the 500 page feeder over the paper tray.

The actual footprint of the unit is very small so it's good for tight desktop spaces.

Exceptional printer if you need versatility of being mobile. I could see this as a great printer for college folks or small business who needs to print in the field.

ZINK Technology: A radically new way to print -- instantly

ZINK stands for Zero Ink - a new and simpler approach to printing where high quality, colorful, durable and affordable prints are magically created -- all without a drop of ink. The ZINK Technology, invented by ZINK Imaging, encompasses both the ZINK Paper and the intelligence embedded in every ZINK-enabled device. Over 100 patents and patents pending were generated in the development of this breakthrough technology.

The heart of this new "ZINK" category of printing is the ZINK Paper. The patented ZINK Paper is an advanced composite material with embedded yellow, magenta and cyan dye crystals, activated with 200 million heat pulses, in 30 seconds, in a single pass. With 100 billion crystals in a 2 x 3-inch print, the paper is 100-percent inkless. A ZINK-enabled printer uses heat to activate and colorize these crystals. Because there is no ink, every ZINK-enabled device has the unique benefits of being small, simple, elegant, and eco-friendly.

Polaroid is leveraging the ZINK Technology to bring a new family of digital instant products to the marketplace. The Polaroid Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer is the first ZINK-enabled device available.

Good fun for the creative folks out there...
-By Rick

I purchased the Polaroid PoGo today and have done a fair bit of "playing" with this compact little printer over the past couple of hours. In fact, I have already used the first package of 10 sheets of Zink (Zero Ink) paper that come with the printer. So my first recommendation is; if you are planning on buying a PoGo, I highly recommend getting extra paper so you can get through your "testing" phase without having to purchase more paper. However, don't go crazy and buy too much, there are expiration dates on the paper which may affect your picture quality if you take to long to "expose" (print) them.

Connectivity:

I have tested the Bluetooth capabilities with my Motorola Q, Laptop Computer (Bluetooth enabled), my desk-top Windows Vista computer (with Radio Shack "Bluespoon" Bluetooth 2.0 adaptor added) and my PictBridge capable Canon Powershot A 640 camera (directly connected to PoGo via USB cable) and the printer worked like a charm in all of the above tests.

Speed of Printing:

Print time is about 1 minute per photo. There was no noticeable change in print speed with any of the tests I performed. Using the Bluetooth (wireless) connection or plugging in your USB cable directly from your camera did not seem to make any difference as to how fast the image printed.

Image Quality:

Not great...but not the worst I have seen either...The pictures I printed from my camera (via USB connection) looked better than my pictures from my cell phone, but this was likely due to the higher megapixel image created by my camera versus the 1 megapixel image from my cell phone. However, the "white balance" of both my camera and cell phone images were a little "off". The whites were extremely white (almost washed-out) and the dark (shadow areas) were very dark. So if you stay away from printing bright "beach / snow" images or dark "night" photographs you will be OK. Photos with lots of color (flowers, for example) looked pretty good when printed with the PoGo.

Cool things to do:

The adhesive on the back of the photo paper is a nice feature of this product. This makes it possible to add pictures to your hand written journals. You can stick them to business card magnets and put photos all over your refrigerator. You can make photo luggage tags, cards and much, much more.

If you don't need the highest quality image, but want to do some fun, creative stuff with photographs I would definitely recommend the PoGo. If you are a photographer hoping that the PoGo would give you a quick "proof" of what your printed images will look like, then this printer is probably not for you, since the image quality is not as good as you could get with some standard ink jet printers.

Have fun...

Novel Tool for Spontaneous Prints
-By R. Frobenius

This is a fun little printer mainly for on-the-spot prints. Kids especially like getting prints instantly. The Bluetooth connection works well, as does PictBridge via USB cable directly to camera. The unit is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket - you can take a picture of someone with your cell phone camera, send it to the printer wirelessly, and then magically hand them a print a few minutes later.

Now for the rough spots. While I really enjoy this printer, you should probably be aware of some hassles you may encounter (as I did). The battery life is not super-great - it's rated at 15 pictures, but if it's cold outside you may find the battery dead until you warm the unit up again. The metal case doesn't help matters in this regard. You can bring the charger with you, but be aware that the charger is about as big as the unit itself - a minor annoyance.

Picture quality - there's a reason the prints are so small. The quality is somewhat marginal, but usable. Most people are impressed that the thing exists in the first place and don't scrutinize the prints that much, so the quality is generally good enough. I attended a wedding and started printing lots of prints for an on-the-spot scrapbook. The printer started streaking badly on the prints. There is a cleaning process you can run, but it became quite a time-consuming hassle. Not to mention the waste each time a print was unusable.

I still give it four stars because it's a fun product and usually works well. The Bluetooth connection is a great feature for cell phone pics. Just be aware that you may have some occasional hassles.

Update: I've discovered that I get consistently very good looking results by keeping the special blue cleaning/calibrating sheet that comes with each pack. I run the sheet through before using the printer each day (if it hasn't been used that day), and also after every three prints. The colors come out nice and rich, and no streaks.

Finally, instant pictures again
-By N. A. Nelson

I used to take my old Polaroid on every trip and give people a picture of themselves and while they were admiring it would snap another picture--they were always smiling in that second picture. Now I can do it again. I have only printed a few samples but am very happy with the quality (printed from my Canon SD900) and time to print. My only negative comment is that the charger is large and heavy. I am hoping I can find an extra battery as sometimes it is hard to find electricity for charging when traveling. I definitely recommend this product.

My #1 choice for a micoSDHC reader, or for a USB flash drive
- By David Carswell

I love this thing.

  1. It is tough: It's not made of cheap plastic; has a very substantial feel, no wiggle, no flex.
  2. It is fast enough; my cards seem to be the limiting factor.
  3. It is *tiny*. It fits almost entirely within the USB port. I leave one in my laptop at all times ... when it's in the case, seriously, at all times.
  4. The lanyard/keyring loop hole is on the device, not on the cap, so you won't lose it. The hole is recessed, so it can't break off, unlike the other tiny reader by the same manufacturer (also a very nice device, btw).
  5. The light is bright!
  6. The card fits into the reader "backwards", i.e. you have to remove the reader from the port to get it out. The card is a little difficult to get out, but it's *not* falling out by accident. Think of this device as one to convert a micro SDHC card into a tiny USB flash drive ... if you want to frequently remove the card itself, i.e. to put in your phone, the other reader by the same manufacturer may better suit your tastes.
  7. The cap fits very very snugly ... It's doubtful that it'll be falling off.

Here's the other reader by the same manufacturer: ELAGO Mobile Micro SD & M2 Reader (White) + Sandisk 8GB Microsdhc Memory Card
I have this one, too, and it's every bit as good, just different in terms of its intended purpose: better if you want to remove the card itself frequently.

So, in short: an fantastic reader, fantastic USB drive (supply your own storage), and I have a couple more on the way.

Only 3 written reviews?
-By Ronald Glidden

I can't believe these things aren't flying off the shelves!! Much better than any USB stick. When a USB stick fails it's either the memory chip or the controller, so you end up throwing the whole thing away. With this type of setup if the controller fails you can just remove the memory stick and use another controller or a micro-SD to standard SD adapter to gain access to your data again. Cuts your chances in half of losing files. Just read the other reviews, they all say everything I would say about this little gizmo. Someone mentioned that the blue light doesn't blink when data is written or read to/from the device, this is only partially correct - it actually flashes rapidly. With a class 6 memory stick it flashes VERY rapidly, hard to notice, but it does. I would prefer the light stay off unless it's being accessed. Someone else mentioned the memory stick was hard to get in and out - Well, yeah at first I wasn't sure which way to insert the card, so be careful. Be sure to insert it into the thinner slot face up with the yellow button face up. And push the yellow button to "eject" the card when you need to.

Very good for micro SD HC reading/writing
-By S. Presnov

The speed is good enough relating to Transcend multi card reader.
The construction is reliable and the build quality is also very good. Plastics doesn't look or feel cheap.
In addition there is a blue led indicator, just like on the bigger flash drives.

Excellent printer - Here is info on bluetooth adapter; case.
-By Stephen D. Ferris

We bought this little gem to take to Europe. First impressions are very favorable. It's small, reliable, and prints beautifully. At just over four pounds, it's perfect for travel.

The little Bluetooth adaptor also works very well. Reading the manual (!), I discovered it is possible to mount the adapter permanently inside the printer so that it's not exposed and doesn't need attachment every time it is used. This is a simple procedure, and enhances the usefulness of the Bluetooth capability that is all but de rigueur when traveling. The installation / setup information is also in the electronic manual that comes on the CD.

But as good as the printer is, it does not come with (nor does Canon offer) a case of any kind. I found the perfect solution - from Case-Mate: go to http://www.case-[...] and buy the 'Glovez 15"' sleeve (like a large envelope with a velcro closure / flap). It comes in an assortment of colors and is a skin-tight (but very workable) fit in the 'length' direction. When inserted, the printer doesn't take up every bit of the case in the 'width' direction, meaning there is just enough room to also accommodate the cord and AC brick. Throw these in, close the flap, and you're always ready to roll.

Best part: this 'Glovez' sleeve is only $9.99 + $3.99 S/H, and gets to you in a few days. It's not bulky - just what one wants to protect the printer but not take up room. (As an aside, the Case-Mate Glovez 13" [for the MacBook 13" and Air] fits the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 perfectly).

March 8, 2011: Came back (for the first time) to look over some of my reviews, and thought I would update this one. We took the printer to Europe for a month in the summer of 2008 (and, as noted by one of the commenters, it does indeed have a built-in usable voltage range of 100 - 240V, 50 - 60 Hz, so one needs only an adapter for local outlets, and not a transformer of any kind). It performed flawlessly then, and continues to do so today.

We take it everywhere. It goes in the bag wherever we go on vacation, or on business, and has never missed a beat. It sets up in an instant as soon as you get to your hotel room - so easy to use. As stated before, I highly recommend the internally-mounting bluetooth adapter; it's never in the way, impossible to lose, and reliable. OK: Canon gets a small demerit for not building it in in the first place, but... With today's wireless-built-in portable PCs and other devices, it's a snap to hook up to the Internet within moments of arriving at your hotel, then send maps, proposals, anything else, etc. to the printer with no cables whatever. Especially good when both of us have our laptops out at a hotel room: we can both send jobs to the printer across the room without getting in each other's way. It's quick, reliable, durable, with various 'quality levels' available - and I highly recommend it for mobile use.

I know Canon also makes a battery that 'bolts-on' to the back of this printer. For my application, the additional $100 wasn't worth the extra bulk - to achieve a freedom from the electric grid that I didn't need. But if you conduct business in your pickup, or out in the field, it would certainly make sense: put the printer on the passenger seat and produce a customer invoice, etc. on the spot.

I seldom wax so enthusiastic over a product, and have been known to be excoriatingly critical of poor designs / execution. But Canon hit the nail dead center with this product: if you're in the market for a genuinely useful, rugged, portable printer - get it. You will not regret the decision.

Not just a travel toy
-By Callie

Bought this to use while traveling, but once I set it up in an inconspicuous spot in the living room (where I spend way too much time with the laptop), I've been using it all the time. Haven't printed photos, but for letters, Web page copies, even maps, quality matches my Epson printers. It's at least as fast as any other home printer I've had. (But yes, it does spit out the pages from the table onto the floor; I attribute that to where I have it placed, and I don't care. I don't have to go upstairs to the desktop printer anymore.)

I use a Mac, which comes with Bluetooth, and bought the adaptor. So no cables, just the print command from the across the room, and I'm in business. I can access all the printer functions, including printer utilities, using Bluetooth -- which I can't with my Epson, which is networked through my Airport router.

Pricey, perhaps, but I've already taken this with me on a long weekend and was happy to be able to print out something I needed. I'll definitely find room in the luggage for this one.....

UPDATE: Still have this printer, and 15 months later, still like it. One hiccup: Upgraded my iBook (Mac OS10.4x) to a MacBookPro (OS10.5x "Leopard") and could not connect to the printer via bluetooth. In May, found a link via a Mac user forum to Canon driver updates, and I'm back in business. Until I did, was able to connect the printer to my Airport Extreme router and still use it. However, restoring bluetooth functionality made my day. Not sure whether Amazon allows links, and it's hard to find on the Canon site. But you should look for the ip100sosmosx100us driver package. A google search will bring it up. Perhaps newer printers already have these drivers with the install software. If not, give it a try.

Canon iP100 Mobile Photo Printer
-By John R. Huerkamp

I purchased the Canon iP100 so I could have a small, compact printer in my travel trailer. This one fills the bill perfectly. Setup was easy and it worked right out of the box. Print speed and quality is excellent. The only flaw is that it occassionally feeds multiple sheets of paper at one time. Fanning the paper before placing it in the feel tray helps rectify this.

Works well for my tmobile g2. The included cord is very short-maybe 18" at most, but you can always switch to another cord. It charges my phone in the car. Good for the price.

Customer Reviews

Um, I saw the negative reviews, and don't really care...
-By Sean Gumm

Because in my humble opinion, the phone is fun. I'm so sick of touch phones I couldn't bear my TMobile Mytouch 3g anymore. The thing was a pain, force close, slow, etc. I wanted a full keyboard again. People seem to love smaller, because admittedly, it's more accessible. However, just forego the body glove on this phone, and it still fits in your pants pocket. I tend to think bigger phones get taken better care of, because you're more aware of it. My phone doesn't force close. It's incredibly fast. I enjoy Media Hub app, which allows me to purchase or rent movies right to my phone. For the inability to see in broad daylight, turn the light up on your phone. I did and mine works fine.

Being able to text and surf the web at warp speeds has been very enjoyable. I've found the phone to have some things that seem bulky or what not, but all in all nothing is ever perfect. So I'm rating this 5 stars.

Awesome for sidekick fans
-By Leslie

I used to have the previous Danger sidekicks, the original sidekick and the sidekick id. I was thrilled when Tmobile debuted with the new sidekick. It's not at all like the old sidekicks, the only thing in common with them is the screen flipping up. It's very easy to manage and I love all the android apps. It is more bulky than other phones, but not so much that it's an issue. Plus, this sidekick is a touchscreen. also, as a side note it's manufactured by Samsung. I definitely recommend the phone. It's highly customizable.

Best Android phone for email and texting (at this time)
-By Jose A. Campo

Let's be honest ... there is no perfect phone out there (talking about Android capable phones) Or you opted for a very expensive and heavy HTC or Droid (with virtual keyboard) or you get one with physical keyboard.

I only have a couple of days with it, so I cannot give a full battery's review, but like it so far. This is a fantastic cellphone for email and texting and ok overall device for the rest, including browsing and taking pictures.

--What's great--

Dedicated keyboard:
If you don't text a lot or barely use the keyboard, stay away from this device. The phone screen is not extremely small but this cellphone does not really shine on that area. What you're getting is a dedicated 5 rows keyboard where typing is a real pleasure. After owning an HTC H2 (nice cellphone after rooting and running Froyo) and other HTC models, I should say ... nothing like real typing. Cellphone's screens are really responsive on these days but the problem with virtual keyboards is that you need to swap and change rows all the time so the whole typing experience changes. I was really looking for something like this and happy I found it. I thought about the HTC G2 but this keyboard is better and the hinges mechanism is stronger and way more solid. I also like the idea of having a small trackball for navigating and clicking hyperlinks; there is no trackball on the HTC G2.

Fast
It is really fast. In terms of the touch screen and Operating System, it is very responsive. You swap and change screens without major issue, I have not noticed any lag. The browsing's speed depends of many factors (area coverage, browser, etc) but this stuff is faster than my Wifi connection at home. I am getting 6Mbps; downloading or viewing multimedia content is really nice. It is not as smooth or crisp as my previous HTC HD2, but that's the trade off of having a smaller screen and better keyboard. For "on the go" browsing requirements, it's more than enough.

Layout and buttons
Like I said, fantastic keyboard. The hinges mechanism is stronger and better than similar phones. It has a dedicated camera button but the power button is on the opposite side and below, so it is kind of weird and maybe you can turn it off my mistake? Has not happened to me and you need to confirm when turning off anyway (standard on all phones) but the power button could be in a better place. Not a big deal, you get used to. You will also have the "back" button, which is an arrow, the menu button, the "home" button and there is another button which is kind of a "task bar" button. I did not have that on my Galaxy Tab but lets you switch between applications, it's kind of cool having a dedicated one just for that, instead of press and hold the "menu" button (I think is like that on most Android Phones)

Android experience
Won't talk too much about this (we all know it's running Android 2.2 out of the box) but the UI is nice. Has been customized a bit by Samsung but not bloated with tons of unproductive and expensive programs like ATT does on most of their Android models. You can do wifi calling and tethering and as fas as I know, it's completely free (wifi calls will consume your minutes though but you can call a USA number while traveling, let's say from Europe or South America. Just be sure roamaing is off. Tethering will also use your available data plan air time so please refer to your Tmobile representative and confirm)

--The not so good--

Screen
Well ... the screen is really responsive but not the biggest one. It's 3.5 I think but based on the overall phone's size, it could be bigger. There are two black bezels at both sizes of the screen that are "stealing" precious space. Unless they did this to save money and sell it cheaper (this cellphone actually has an attractive price) this is a waste of space!

No camera flash
I am not a big camera flash lover (I do photography as a hobby) so I don't really miss this. I prefer and use a dedicated camera to keep my memories, avoiding flashes if I can, but this is certainly a missing feature. It can be useful for some people and situations so keep that in mind. Indoor pictures are ok though, just be sure there is enough ambient light before taking the shoot. However and in order to be fair, there is a front camera for face to face chatting via web or Android programs. Most cellphones come with only one so that's positive.

Refreshing Interval for Social Network apps.
If you are an Android user, you probably know what I am talking about. If this is your 1st Android phone, this is basically the refreshing interval when your cellphone's widgets (Facebook, Twitter, email) will connect and download new stuff while device is idle seating on your desk. The Android software has been customized here so you can only set refreshes one time every day (or manually) It is good for saving battery but I don't like it. I want to be able to refresh whenever I want and I can miss important notifications that way. What's more weird is that even with that daily option only, my Facebook and email got new stuff frequently so I don't fully understand yet how or why that's happening. I mean, for sure the cellphone is doing a more frequent refresh but why the "one time per day" option only?

Plastic look
Granted, plastic phones do not look as professional or nice as steel ones, but hey! ... you want a cellphone to impress or because you need it for work and family? My wife's HTC looks nicer but it is heavy as well. The 4G Sidekick is not ugly but if your cellphone is a "self esteem booster" to you, get the HTC G2 maybe. Not saying this is a cheap one, but has a younger look than most mid range cellphones. I don't mind that, honestly, it's superb for texting and emails.

--Summary--
Great phone overall. Good Android experience (Froyo out of the box) with a nice Samsung customization on the UI. The screen is not the biggest one but this cellphone is great for "texting" with a very attractive price.
