Motorola Defy Android Phone

Customer Reviews

Great 'Mid-Range' phone
-By Robert Beier

Pros: Great call quality, fast processor, nice quality screen; Cons: Motoblur, no HD Video.

I had a Motorola Cliq and swore I would never use another Motorola Android phone after that experience. I had planned to upgrade to a G2 or MyTouch HD, but just couldn't afford it. I read the reviews on this device and decided to give Motorola one last chance.

I can't yet speak on whether or not the experience with support or upgrades will be any better as it is too soon to tell, but the device itself is a great phone. The screen is not huge, but it's not small either; it is bright and very easy to read. Images look great on it as well. Though it only has a 800mghz processor it does run rather well and if you plan to root this thing you can easily get your phone up to 1ghz or more. I am not the biggest fan of Motoblur as it can cause the phone to lag, but replacing the Moto home screen can take care of a lot of that lag. The picture quality is not the best, but it is decent; I only wish it had HD video, but for quick videos on the fly it gets the job done.

If you are in the market for a quality Android phone, but can't afford the $200 price tag of most high end phones, this would make a great choice for you.

Tired of Frilly fragile phones?
-By Eric A. Campbell

I purchased this phone about a month ago and it is really everything i hoped it would be. the only thing i don't care for is the way the camera capture button works through the touch screen rather than a button on the casing. I live at the beach and this phone goes with me everywhere, and after a month (without being in a case) this phone looks just as it did when I took it out of the box. It has enough features to impress without being so overly complicated that you never use them. I would recommend this phone to any person who is tired of caring for their phone like a newborn, I don't want to buy cases and screen protectors. I've even swam with this phone in my board shorts a couple of times! (not on purpose) and have had no issues what so ever.

Great Phone Does Everything I Need It To
-By Eric R. Bauer

Pros: lightweight, durable, small, fast, Android OS, T-Mobile network, DLNA, GPS very accurate, speaker is LOUD, reliable

Cons: Gorilla Glass will sometimes have some issues recognized your finger in extreme cold, camera could probably be better, needs better Flash support

First I'd like to say I was an early adopter to the entire Android platform coming from a G1. This phone fulfilled all my expectations and made up for all the shortcomings of the G1. Before I made the decision on buying this phone I spent a week with the MyTouch 4G before returning it for this. The MyTouch is an outstanding phone don't get me wrong but it just wasn't for me. I found the Mytouch to be too big and heavy and thought I would break it if I dropped it. I was tempted by the front facing camera which I came to the realization that it would never get used. I've already dropped the Defy multiple times with no issues. Don't be fooled by some of the specs this phone is fast. After coming from the rooted G1 I was also skeptical on the entire Motoblur interface. I really don't see what the big deal is that you have to make a free account through Motorola and deal with some different icons on the screen. If you really don't like the look of it try LauncherPro. If you are new to the Android platform don't worry, if you don't like the way something is on the phone there is probably a free application to download that will function the way you want. I wish Amazon had this phone when I bought it but I had to go to the T-Mobile store.

Excellent value

The Motorola Phone Tools 4.0 software worked perfectly with my RAZR V3 phone. It quickly installed and updated and walked through driver installation on XP. Once the phone was connected it performed all functions without any problems. The software also remembers several profiles which is handy since we have multiple phones for the family. Finally, the software uses standard cables to interface to the phone unlike some products that require a special cable keyed to the software.

Great phone

This phone is awesome. I have one through Boost Mobile with the unlimited plan. Bought it on August 6th and no regrets. People that whine and complain about the screen res or no games. It's a phone people, nothing more, nothing less. I use the walkie-talkie regularly, my wife and I text back and forth daily with no missed or missing messages. This phone receives/makes calls and walkie-talkie's where others have failed. If people want games buy a Gameboy, want pictures buy a camera, not real hard to figure out. This little gem was built to be a phone and that's exactly what it is.

In short.... See it as it really is, a phone.

For a basic phone quite good

For someone needing a very basic phone and services (i.e., no email access, no camera, etc.) this phone is quite good. The sound quality on both the built in speaker and mic and the speaker phone are very good, the phone itself is very portable and it has buttons one does not have to be a midget to operate. On the negative side (and why I give it 4 instead of 5 stars), it has a relatively small battery for its size, as anyone who has opened but back to install can attest. Hence the battery power for such a basic phone is not on a par with other "basic" phones, though not by much. A second critique is the very small screen which is, in addition, not very well lit. It can be a problem viewing, even in the shade. A third problem is that the interface for some of the features (i.e., voice recorder, contact list) is not as easy as it should be. Thanks to the small screen, one needs to scroll quite a bit to access some of the phone's features. One last critique is that the messaging service is quite slow. Hence if you need to use such a feature this phone is far from optimal.

All and all a very good phone despite the weaknesses cited above. If someone is looking for a bare bones phone this is more than fulfills the requirements.

Easy tool

MPT 4.0 was very easy to install and works great with my Motorola cell phone. It took several minutes to run the updates but I didn't mind. After the install and updates were finished, I was running version 5. The program is easy to use. I just plug in my usb cable (bought separately) to my phone and pc, then start MPT. The software is easy to use and makes it simple for me to backup my phone or transfer pictures and music.

Motorola Phone Tools 4

I got this product in a very timely manner, and it installed easily onto my laptop and was able to find my phone on the list, along with a ton of other ones, even the really old phones. I did have some problems with transferring ring-tones from my laptop to my phone, and it said i needed to spend another 20 bucks on the correct driver. This wasn't the case at all, it was just an error in the coding. So if anyone else buys this program and has the same kind of problems transferring music or pictures, just go to Google and type in Motorola Phone tools and the name of the error that you are getting, and you 90% of the time will get a return with the answers that you need for free.

Review:

Spent several hours working to get it to synchronize up along with my Motorola W490 simply to have it either tell me that this phone isn't supported (listed that it is) OR that this mobile phone is busy, try again later. I re-installed repeatedly, updated VISTA, the drivers, the application. Absolutely nothing. The F. A. Q. section of support website is buggy and only shows 1/3 of the listed pages. Conversing with support in India is really a lesson in futility. I'm so sorry which i lost my time and money. Stay away from the head ache, never buy this particular item. Do a trial version of SyncCell today, and presto - very first time, absolutely no problems.

Shipped within the expected time period however it came with the gsm card slot damaged, therefore the mobile phone states "insert card" at all times even though the gsm card was inserted. 4.) Motorola Mini USB Travel Charger for RAZR V3 , KRZR K1/K1m, SLVR, PEBL, and Q Phone

Review:

As an earlier review mentioned, plug in this charger and absolutely nothing happens. My RAZR does not even notice. I purchased 2; neither would charge my phone. (One of them rattled; something loose inside. ) As opposed to what another review stated, this charger is not exactly like the one that came with my phone; although identical, it's not the same, and contains another model number (see the label on the charger itself). I also bought a car charger but I am not planning to risk using it on my mobile phone. Did I return these products? No, I simply threw them away, simply because at these prices, with delivery and handling both ways not refunded, I would most likely get rid of even more money returning them.

Motorola RAZR V3 Unlocked Phone

The Moto Razr V3 is skillfully designed to provide excellent performance. Inside the ultra-thin design are innovative features like MPEG4 video playback, Bluetooth® wireless technology, an electronic camera plus more. And with the precision-cut keypad, minimalist styling and metal finish, the V3 appears just as wonderful as it works. The real difference is within the details. See who’s calling, in color, without opening your phone — the huge internal display is accompanied by an amazing external display. The precision-cut metal keypad responds to the lightest of touches. And the features you cannot usually see are similarly outstanding, like quad-band GSM — for global calls where GSM network coverage and roaming contracts are present.

Motorola RAZR V3

Features

1.) This unlocked cell phone is compatible with GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile. Not all carrier features may be supported. It will not work with CDMA carriers like Verizon Wireless, Alltel and Sprint.
2.) Quad-band GSM cell phone compatible with 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies and GPRS data capabilities
3.) VGA digital camera (640 x 480) with video capture; 5 MB memory (not expandable)
4.) Bluetooth for handsfree communication; full duplex speakerphone; access to personal email; web browser; SMS/MMS/EMS messaging
5.) Up to 6.67 hours of digital talk time and 250 hours of standby time

Review:

The Black RAZR V3 is the wireless phone I've always wanted. It's that simple.

Just before having acquired mine, I'd read commentary from individuals who would tell of all of the capabilities the RAZR does not have: "I could purchase the (insert model number of cheaper, but still costly phone that does 100 various things--all of them poorly) and get much more for a lot less money. " When I would research a model suggested by these self-proclaimed device freaks, I would realize that it's proportions make keeping it in a pocket an difficult and uneasy proposition; I would see that the photos it takes are not nearly of equivalent quality to those taken by even a simple digital camera; I would find that the lo-res video it could shoot provides no useful function; I would find that web-browsing, game-playing, Instant messaging, streaming television content, all suck up battery-life and eventually make the unit worthless for the unexpected purpose of putting and taking phone calls; I would see that the device casing consists of cheap and flimsy plastics which will make me question just how long it wll last; I would find that minor attention had been paid to how the phone's design and style will contribute to, or detract from, user convenience. After my research, I figured for all the money I would save by purchasing "Phone X" over getting a RAZR, I'd still have paid hundreds too much for a filmsy piece of cutting-edge technojunk. (Don't consider my word for it. Browse around on the web for feedback about the RAZR around the time of its inroduction and discover the suggestions from consumers that individuals pick the Motorola V600 alternatively. Then look at the consumer testimonials of the V600 on this website. )

The RAZR has a camera, a web-browser, Instant messaging functionality, and a entire array of other capabilities all of these are outlined in the product information. To the degree that the RAZR does these things effectively I will provide little, if any, comment--mainly simply because I do not care about them. That to which I can and will confirm is that the RAZR surpasses my expectation on how it will serve AS A PHONE.

Using my own standards, a wireless phone ought to attract and keep a signal; It's earpiece should provide very clear sound at a volume which can compete with background noises; it's mouthpiece need to pick up the users voice clearly; it must be lightweight enough to permit for placement in clothing pockets without making prominent bulges; it ought to be solidly constructed out of tough materials that are not susceptible to scratching; it will have good battery life. And yes, anything at all for which I pay out hundreds of dollars need to be made with aesthetics in mind: you will find too many wireless phones that appear to be throw away children's toys, or like awkward, all-purpose, button-riddled devices.

Using the above conditions, the RAZR V3, specially the Black model, is near perfect. The sound in the ear piece can certainly be louder, but I've yet to have a caller's voice drowned out by the noise of busy New York City streets. The people to whom I am communicating have claimed to have heard my voice fully and clearly. Battery life could possibly be longer, however, exactly the same could be said about many wireless phones that are heavier and have bigger batteries. I've used the phone on both T-Mobile and Cingular networks and observed that it takes in a strong signal on both; it has never decreased a call. I discovered the speaker phone to be loud and clear regardless of my expectations to the contrary. Is the much-lamented Motorola phone book program clunky? Yes it is. But the RAZR's voice-dialing works well, making it possible to prevent scrolling over the phone book if one dislikes it that much.

I will try to boil it down with a fairly clumsy analogy: Complaining that the RAZR does not do adequate in the way of tech-gimmicks to justify its price (which is significantly lower that it was when it was introduced) is much like complaining that an exotic sports vehicle is not well worth the money because it does not have a cup holder, a GPS system, and DVD player like the Minivan you have been looking to purchase. That ridiculousness ignores the design which makes the sports car an excellent performer on the road, and the interest put toward making it smooth and aesthetically satisfying. The RAZR's performance has made issue over signal strength a thing of the past. and its design is unmatched--not just for it's ultra-compactness, except for the solidity of it's build. That makes it worth what I purchased it. And my incapability to talk to the quality of other phones on the market put them away from consideration.

Apart from, as the saying goes, black is beautiful.

That the RAZR can't function as a business-card scanner does not trouble me. For individuals who need to have whichever feature-laden mobile device is most desired at this time, get a Samsung MM-A800, clip it on you belt (you'll need to), and make yourself the right to express your phone can perform just about everything--poorly.

Motorola T-Mobile Sidekick Slide

This Mobile phone is a product made by the Motorola Company and it features the Sidekick Slide design. It costs over a hundred dollars but its price tragically went down. Perhaps this is due to the factors where there are already several users of this phone who have claimed that they are not satisfied basing on their experience through the use of this mobile.

The previous product is the Sidekick LX which is almost exactly the same but their differences comes from the design where the Slide of this new version is tinier, shorter and slimmer. Moreover, this model is the first product that is manufactured by the Motorola Company with an appearance in design which is color black.

Other features that you need to know about the Slide are the QVGA display, 1.3 Megapixel Camera, and it supports web applications such as IM, Email, Browsing the Internet and etc…

Review

It’s already been two years ago since I happen to use this mobile phone from Motorola. What I like about this unit is its design and the Sidekick Slide is what makes it more interestingly cool. However, the drawdown are all on its features where there seems to be a lot of technical failures especially on the LCD.

The first trouble that I happen to encounter on this mobile is that the LCD began to show horizontal lines with various colors. It keeps on moving either up or down which blocks the display especially when I’m texting or reading messages.

So I decided to get it repaired to the Mobile Phone repair shop because the warranty has already expired. I was greatly disappointed that they cannot find the technical problem where the life span of this unit lasted for only two years.

The phone is still with me and it is still functioning properly except that the LCD display is getting worse. I no longer use it but I’m simply keeping it for the purpose that I might find some solution.

Searching the internet for possible solution and opinion, I have found out that other owners of the same type of phone also have the same troubles. Moreover, it is really a very nice mobile phone that the Motorola Company should try to further improve.
